children's teachers.
As our girls are growing older,
I can see that Rosh Hashanah is
becoming more significant to
them — more than just dipping
apples in honey. Our daughters
are 9 and 5 3/4 (she insists I use
the fraction). In the past, we've
talked in simple terms about the
meaning of the holiday. But now,
our girls are both in religious
school, and we feel that we can
ratchet things up a notch. We
reflect on the past year. What
were the highlights? What kinds
of things would we like to have
happen this year? What things
can we do better? How can we be
more helpful to others?
While our discussions are get-
ting more sophisticated, their
themes really aren't much differ-
ent than when our children were
younger: self-improvement and
tikkun olam (repair of the
world).
We find the Jewish New Year
much more significant and real
than Jan. I. Besides, I'd much
rather hear the shofar than "Auld
Lang Syne" any day.
Have a sweet new year.
Grant that we may he down in peace,
and raise us up to life renewed.
Spread the shelter of peace over us,
over Israel and over Jerusalem.
May You be a shield about us, protecting us
from hate and war, from pestilence and sorrow.
Curb within us the inclination to do evil, and shelter
us beneath the shadow of Your wings. Guard our
coming and our going and grant us life and peace
from this time forth and for evermore.
