As a corporate and entertain-
ment lawyer, John Kamins sees
his share of prominent people,
but none are more notable than
the individuals and families he
helps through his work with the
Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
Kamins, a partner in the firm
of Honigman Miller Schwartz
and Cohn LLP in Detroit, was
recently re-elected to his second
term as the society's board chair-
man. As the world's largest vol-
untary health organization
devoted specifically to curing
blood cancers, the society has
funded more than $400 million
for research since its founding in
1949. These diseases, which
include leukemia, lymphoma,
Hodgkin's disease and myeloma,
affect 747,000 Americans and
cause more deaths in people
under 20 than any other form of
cancer.
A native of Chicago, Kamins
attended undergraduate and law
school at the University of

Michigan. While there, he met a
coed from Huntington Woods
named Judith Sperling. They
have been married 37 years. Both
of their children, Robert and
Heather, are attorneys in
California.
Kamins also served as past
president of the Goodwill
Industries of Greater Detroit
Foundation, past chairman of
the Public Corporation Law
Section of the State Bar of
Michigan and past president of
Temple Beth El in Bloomfield
Township.

What prompted your volunteering?

committee of the State Bar, and I
realized I could use my profes-
sional skills to contribute some-
thing of value. When my kids
started religious school, I wanted
to show them by example that
synagogue life was important, so
I joined the board at Temple
Beth El. Later I became presi-
