History Lesson

Going through the alphabet, Jewish historian Sir Martin Gilbert told
26 short stories of the places he visited around the world from A to Z
to a crowd of about 400 at Congregation Shaarey Zedek in Southfield
on Sept. 25.
His stories ranged from Anchorage, Alaska, where the Jewish com-
munity refers to itself as "The Frozen Chosen," to Zamocz, Poland,
where, in 1942, the Jewish community sent the first comprehensive
account of concentration camps and deportations.
The talk was presented by the Jewish Historical Society of Michigan
as part of a Wayne State University Cohn-Haddow Center for Judaic
studies lecture series.
Gilbert, knighted in 1995, is the official biographer of Sir Winston
Churchill and the author of 20 books on modern Jewish history.
