when he was a boy.
My parents haven't worked in a
long time; I'm their sole support.
It's like having two 60-year-old
children',' he quipped.
"We were dirt poor as I was
growing up. When I was 11, I
wanted a backpack like the other
kids, but we couldn't afford it, so I
told jokes in local coffeehouses to
earn money. I got kicked out of two
elementary schools for being a bad
boy
"But I finally graduated from the
Hamilton Music Academy, and I
still like to compose what I call
`electronic music:"
LaBeouf got the acting bug after
seeing Dr: Quinn, Medicine IVoman
on television and convincing his
mother to look for an agent. He
auditioned by doing standup corn-
edv routines.
He and his pals also made some
amateur movies that won a few
awards at national film festivals.
His big break was starring in
Holes, where he met actor Jon
Voight, who became his mentor.
LaBeouf recently bought his own
home in Burbank, Calif.
"Through my mother's Jewish
influence, I had a modest bar mitz-
vah and I still celebrate the major
holidays, but I also do Christmas
with my father," he said. "I'm proud
that I wrote a poem called 'I Am
Jewish' for a book of writings by
celebrities in honor of Daniel Pearl
(the Jewish journalist murdered by
terrorists in Iraq)."
LaBeouf decided to hold off on
college this fall in order to "create a
strong foundation for my acting
career and solidify it more:' He
also has appeared in movies like
Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle; I,
Robot; and Constantine.
"I'm more of a surfer than a
golfer, so I trained for several
months for the movie to master
my golf swing and putting',' he
explained. "I traveled with the
UCLA golf team for six months,
shadowed the pros at the U.S.
Open and did a lot of virtual reali-
ty golfing; I even lost 10 pounds."

producers undoubtedly are angling
toward Academy Award recogni-
tion. There are some beautiful
scenery shots and unusual camera
angles — even from the bottom of
a cup as the ball falls into it.
In the early 20th century, golf
was a rich gentleman's sport for
the country club elite; the golfers
wore ties and jackets and puffed
on pipes while hitting out of sand
traps.
"But Ouimet proved that any
American, no matter how young,
poor or unknown, could play the
game and even aspire to an upset
victory',' said director Bill Paxton,
known up to now for acting roles
in Titanic and Apollo 13. "This ulti-
mately led to the creation of
municipal golf courses and the
sport's current popularity."
Ouimet remained an amateur
throughout his career and later
awarded golf scholarships.
Almost stealing the movie with
wisecracks is 10-year-old Josh
Flitter, who plays Ouimet's 10-year-
old caddie Eddie Lowery, a pint-
sized golf hustler who was only
slightly larger than the golf bag he
carried.
The cast also includes Stephen
Dillane as Harry Vardon; Elias
Koetas as Francis' hardheaded, but
loving father; Marnie McPhail as
his sympathetic mother; newcom-
er Peyton List as an upper class
rebel who falls in love with Francis
despite his lowly social standing;
and Stephen Marcus as British
golfer Ted Ray.
Mark Frost wrote the screenplay
based on his book. He, Paxton and
some of the contingent of Jewish
producers accompanied LaBeouf
to Birmingham.
Prime candidates for Oscar
nominations are composer Brian
Tyler for his golf-mood musical
score, and Jewish costume design-
er Renee April for her authentic re-
creation of the clothes worn at the
turn of the 20th century.
Enthusiastic applause by the
audience at the end of a special
screening confirms the verdict:
The Greatest Game Ever Played def-
initely makes the cut.

The Greatest Game Ever Played,
filmed at a country club near
Montreal, is a real golf aficionado's
movie that probably should have
been released before the golf sea-
son rather than at the end. But the
