dance on Broadway?
Well, here's your chance.
Oh, by the way ... it's not New
York's Broadway. Its Broadway
Street in downtown Detroit.
On Sunday afternoon, Oct.
2, noted Jewish tap dancer and
choreographer Josh Hilberman
instructs Detroit area tap dance
enthusiasts in the art form on
the sidewalk and parking lot in
front of the Detroit Opera
House. It's all very informal:
free, no registration. Costumes
are encouraged,
and, of course,
0
tap shoes are required.

Hilberman is a freelance tap-
per and teacher who roams the
United States and Europe
teaching tap and holding clin-
ics, like "Tappin' on Broadway."
Although this particular gig is
an idea of the Maggie Allesee
Dance Department at Wayne
State University in Detroit, in
conjunction with the opera
house's dance department,
Hilberman received a financial
grant from the National

Endowment for the Arts to
teach dancing at Wayne for 10
days.
"Tap is plain, old American
folk dancing that originated on
street corners; it's a real dance of
the people," explained
Hilberman, 39, who says he
was "fat and clumsy" as a boy
and hid in the back of the stage
while performing in high
school musicals in his home-
town of Chapel Hill, N.C.
"Then I just started tapping on
my own, and I've been doing it
ever since."
Hilberman's parents, now
divorced, met and married
while both attended the
University of North Carolina's
medical school. "We used to
celebrate the Jewish holidays,
but now the family is not very
relioious , " he said.

He earned an English degree
from Wesleyan University in
Connecticut, and now lives in
Boston, where his wife,
Rebecca, is a neuro-pathologist.
"She may be a better tap
dancer than I am, but I can't
work with brains like she can,"
he quipped.
