dent. I tend to be outspoken
when I see a need, and those are
the kinds of people that get elect-
ed."

How has your business acumen
helped in these endeavors?
"I used my corporate law

background to facilitate a recent
merger of the Leukemia &
Lymphoma Society with a simi-
lar organization in Canada. I
attend meetings on Capitol Hill
and travel all over the world on
behalf of the society"

What has been the most rewarding
aspect of your affiliation with the
Leukemia & Lymphoma Society?

"I'm proudest of the apprecia-
tion I've received from the
patients and their families; their
testimonials are the most moving
thing you can imagine. In the
1960s, childhood leukemia was a
death sentence; the survival rates
were very low. Now, 84 percent of
the kids have a remission of
more than five years. It's very
gratifying to know that this work
is saving lives, extending lives
and giving hope to people who
had none."
