ing year? We will continue to re-
invent and re-invigorate our-
selves, striving to remain impor-
tant and essential to your lives.
IVe will significantly enhance our
Web presence and deliver infor-
mation of interest to you that you
won't find elsewhere.
We will inform, entertain and
delight ... maybe even surprise
you. We know that in today's
information environment, stand-
ing still is the same as sliding
backward. We intend to continue
to earn your readership and trust

by transforming, changing and
adapting. We intend to vigorously
challenge our Jewish communal
institutions to transform, change
and adapt as well, so they don't
continue on the downward slope
toward irrelevance.
On behalf of our entire staff, I
would like to wish you a happy,
healthy New Year surrounded by
those you love and mindful of
never taking for granted the
blessings we have.

Wishing The Communibt A
Happy & Healthy New Year!

with the thought that these peo-
ple couldn't even afford a couple
of two-cent oranges to nourish
their kids.
And yet, elated by the idea that
a cup of coffee has suddenly
become so much more then a
stop in my morning, it is indeed
a remarkable indulgence.
In the past, I have questioned
whether I should have access to
basic needs when so many people
are forced daily to go without. But
in truth I have recently stumbled
upon a very different realization:
As long as I take my steps with
purpose and with grace — as
long as I never allow myself to
forget how incredibly lucky I am,
as long as even at those moments
when it seems like the pursuit of
my own aspirations should be
the focus and center of my world,
I remain conscious of that flame
that represents all of the people
and places that I know so badly
need the touch of a hand as for-
tunate as mine.
And truthfully, as much as I
know that I won't soon be back
in the Nairobi slums — I've
recently returned from a trip to
east Africa — I now realize that
in a situation as seemingly
dejected as the one that I saw, it
only takes a little time, a little
effort, a little bit of money to do
a whole lot of good.
An orange a day, that's what I
can do. Right now. For whatever
the amount of material things I
desire as I make my way, I will
make sure that I set aside the $2

a day that it costs to ensure that
the street children of Nairobi
have, at the very least, a piece of
fruit to sweeten a few moments
in a life filled with struggle and
hardship. It really takes that little.
So as the New Year approaches
and blesses us with bountiful
fruit in so many areas of our
lives, join with me to give a little.
Fruit, grain, eggs — essential
nutrients that we never question
— are missing from the lives of
millions of people every day. The
money that it takes to nourish
entire families literally lies in the
coins between our couches. Spare
change that means nothing to us
but everything to someone else.
When you speak this holiday
about how thankful you are, do
you really mean it? Do something
now. Do something to show that
you are truly thankful for the glo-
rious things that we regard as so
basic in our lives because as much
as I have found myself so quickly
returning to the comforting palm
of America, a little bit of Africa is
within me each time I experience
these simple pleasures.
For I know that I am very for-
tunate — and so are you. 1.7]
