A The Michigan branch was estab- lished in 1990 through the initiative of Rabbi Silberberg. Moscow-born Rabbi Yosef Misholovin is the local FREE director. In Russia, anti-Semitism never let them forget that they were Jews. In America, only a positive Jewish iden- tification would keep their children from assimilating. Shabbat and holi- day services were arranged, complete with Russian-translated siddurim. The Chaim Hebrew Education Center, meeting at Oak Park, regis- tered children rho spoke little or no English. Later, branches opened in Southfield and Farmington Hills. Zipora Misholovin is director of youth activities for the Center. She also runs the FREE winter trip camp. She invites parents and grand- parents to join in the learning, which includes celebration of Sukkot, Chanukah, Purim and Lag b'Omer. In 1997, Moshe Khusid joined the Chaim staff as director of adult education; he also counsels adults. He and the rabbi teach classes on Kaballah, Jewish law and tradition, Parshat Hashovua and Jewish philos- ophy. Although the younger generation speaks English, most Chaim classes are educated in Russian. ri ANN ARBOR ORTHODOX MINYAN 1429 Hill St., Ann Arbor, 48014. Rabbi: Rod Glogower.
