ore than 50 people attend-
ed a Shir Hadash network-
ing party Sept. 28 to
explore new sounds in Jewish music.
People brought guitars, drums and
other instruments and shared melodies
primarily from the Shabbat evening
and morning services.
The group, which included rabbis,
cantors, lay leaders and congregants
from various streams of Judaism, also
discussed the challenges and satisfac-
tions of using music to help people
participate in prayer rather than sim-
ply listening and observing.
Dan Shere of Adat Shalom
Synagogue and Ronn Nadis of
Congregation Beth Ahm worked as a
team to design the program.
Among the performers were Cantor
Samuel Greenbaum and members of
the Beth Shalom Singers, performing
several numbers from their High

Cantor Samuel Greenbaum of Congregation Beth Shalom, far right, per forms with
members of the synagogue choir, from left, Gladys Goldsmith of Southfield, Richard
Racusin of Oak Park, Marcia Tanzman of Farmington Hills, Dan Medow of
Huntington Woods and Gloria Beren of Farmington Hills.

Holiday repertoire; Shere performed
two of his own compositions; Dr.
Howard Lupovitch, Nadis and his
twin daughters, Jewish Academy of
Metropolitan Detroit students Emily
and Rebecca, sang a set of songs from
Congregation Beth Ahm's Shabbat
Limud repertoire; and Aura Ahuvia
from the Reconstructionist Havurah
in Ann Arbor performed two songs
from the Abouyadaya Ugandan Jewish
community repertoire.
Plans that emerged from the event
include a community-wide series of
Melaveh Malkah (post-Shabbat)
songfests to be rotated among the five
Conservative congregations as well as a
series of training workshops for people
to learn more about the various for-
mats showcased at the Sept. 28 event.
The next Shir Hadash event will be
the first Melaveh Malkah at Beth
Ahm, post-Shabbat, on Nov. 19.
