What a delicious complement
to your holiday table!

tragedy of the Holocaust for years, but
I never felt it as deeply as I did when I
walked through Yad Vashem, the
Holocaust museum in Jerusalem, with
my Jewish friends.
While our trip to Israel was certainly
a good cultural, political and econom-
ic exchange, I found the quiet times of

reflection and discussion to be the
most meaningful. My life has been
enriched by seeing the people and
places of Israel; I will certainly remem-
ber this trip for the rest of my life.

The Charge

The headlines coming out of Palestinian-controlled Gaza, which are damag-
ing to the image of the Palestinian Authority, are caused by circumstances
that Israel has set in play.

The Answer

The Palestinian Authority has thousands of men under arms. One must look
to their lack of preparation and/or will to explain the mob's looting and dese-
cration in the former Gazan Jewish communities and the chaos along the
Egyptian border.

"Where was the Red Cross?" "Where
were all the relief workers?"
By afternoon, Rebecca and I had
befriended Kendal, a young boy who
described to us how he and his brother
jumped on to the top of their bunk
bed when the water began to rise in
their bedroom. He described how his
family had been rescued from their
roof. He said that his parents wanted
to stay in their home. They stocked up
on food, but when the water came so
did the mosquitoes. He told me over
and over how nice the weather was in
Michigan. And he was ready to move
on with his life. Although he was just
11, he asked me, "How old do you
have to be to get a job in Michigan?"

Learning From Disaster

What was most compelling about
Hurricane Katrina is the disorganiza-
tion and the catastrophic waste of
resources. Above all, there is the trag-
ic waste of human life, buses that
never came to evacuate the poorest
citizens and infants that could not
get formula. Where is all the money?
Who has the master plan? What is
the vision?

In less than one month, the Jewish
community will mark the day of Yom
Kippur. It will be a time when we
search our souls, ask forgiveness and
hopefully emerge with a greater capac-
ity for kindness and righteousness. If
anything positive can come out of this
disaster, it will be a nationwide Day of
Atonement. It will be a time to assess
what was with the intention to grow
and to improve. It will be a great
opportunity for us to support new
leadership and to turn back the tide of
religious fundamentalism in our
nation.
I will return to Fort Custer, contin-
ue setting up recreation for the chil-
dren, welcoming the truly remarkable
people of New Orleans and doing
what we can to help. Maybe we will
discover that our state and nation are
finally making use of the enormous
amount of money donated and the
offer of thousands of private citizens
to house, employ and care for the peo-
ple of New Orleans. I, for one, will
continue to hold on to the remote
possibility that someone, somewhere,
will read their list and send me an e-
mail.
