Alyssa Kahn Gale, 17, of West Bloomfield holds Emmie, a 3-month-old black Labrador puppy rescued with eight siblings
from a rooftop in New Orleans. While the dog's mother remains in critical condition in New Orleans, Emmie and the
rest of the litter are in foster care and up for adoption through the Michigan Animal Rescue League, (248) 335-9290.
Emmie gets along well with Megan and Willow, the Gale's golden retrievers watching through the door.

When Hurricane Katrina devastated
the Gulf States a little over two weeks
ago, BBYO Inc. quickly mobilized an
effort to assist victims. Since that time,
BBYO has welcomed displaced Jewish
teens to programs, directed funds to
the United Jewish Communities and
sold close to 1,000 teen-created hurri-
cane relief T-shirts, with proceeds
croinab to the American Red Cross.
It is at difficult times like this that
I am reminded of the significance of
our work," said Matthew Grossman,
the executive director of BBYO, Inc.
"To witness a community of thou-
sands of young people committed to
carrying out the values and ideals that
have been a part of the Jewish people
for generations is truly inspiring."
The organization also has instituted
a policy waving all membership and
program fees and offering additional
scholarships to all displaced Jewish
teens wishing to take part in BBYO
experiences.

Relief" T-shirt, go to the Web site:

Reporting From Israel
Gil Hoffman, left, political correspondent for the Jerusalem
Post, updates a crowd of about 125 people on Israel at Temple
Shir Shalom in West Bloomfield on Sept. 15.
Aside from talking about the disengagement from Gaza and
parts of the West Bank in objective first person terms,
Hoffiman, who served as an interpreter for the New York Times
and Fox News reporters during the final week of the disengage-
ment, commented on the upcoming Israeli elections.
He said that if Benjamin Netanyahu defeats Prime Minister
Ariel Sharon in the Likud primary election, don't be surprised
if Sharon forms his own party and runs against Netanyahu
and Shimon Peres from the Labor Party.
The talk was co-sponsored by the American Israel Public
Affairs Committee and Temple Shit. Shalom.
