rom moon walks to pony rides
and popcorn to kosher hot
dogs — the annual Labor Day
picnic at Temple Israel in West
Bloomfield was filled with food,
friends and family fun.
About 4,000 people of all ages
enjoyed a glorious
sunny day at the
event, which was
free and open to
everyone.
"This is an
opportunity for us
to reach out to the
entire community,"
said Temple Israel's
ROBIN
Rabbi Josh
S CHWARTZ Bennett.

"We're just going
play and have a
good time," said Michael Atler of
Farmington Hills, there with his two
daughters, Ally and Lexi.
"We've been coming to this picnic
for at least five years — it's a wonder-
ful experience," he said.
Children seemed to have the most
fun of all — playing on giant slides,
marveling at magicians, petting a
llama and other animals at a petting
farm on the lawn and getting their
faces painted.
Helen Meyer of West Bloomfield
was busy with her three sons, Michael,
9, Daniel, 6, and Samuel, 4. "The
kids think it's heavenly," Meyer said.
Heidi Brode and Joel Krugel of
West Bloomfield helped their 2-year-
old daughter Darby ride the merry-go-
round.
"We had a ball last year and we're
having a great time this year," Brode
said.
The picnic also featured musical
entertainment by DJs from Living
Energy in Commerce Township and a
children's concert with Canadian TV
stars "Judy and David."
"It's terrific to see so many people
here having a.wonderfiil time," said
Rabbi Marla Hornsten.
In addition to the fun and games,
there was a blood drive and a fund-
raising effort for victims of Hurricane
Katrina.
Spotted among the crowd at the
Sept. 5 Labor Day extravaganza were:
Mark and Shari Enfield of Commerce
Township, Jason Chess of Ann Arbor,
and Marci Zeman, Perah and Scott
Baker, Julie Stern, Rick Benton,
Ashley Simmons and Tracie
Goldman, all of West Bloomfield.
The picnic was sponsored by the
Morris and Esther Bittker Fund. ❑
