and discussed issues of faith and God's
providence. We also played memory
games and other lighter fare."
Through night they heard the 135-
mile-an-hour winds. "We heard huge
trees snap and through our skylights,
actually saw some of them fly away
like paper," he wrote.
"We told stories of faith and
endurance," he wrote. "Fortunately,
with our communal positive thinking,
we all stayed in very good spirits and
quite optimistic, despite the circum-
stances."
By morning, they had lost all power,
phones (except for sporadic cell phone
service) and running water. "The
intense heat and humidity was over-
powering," he wrote. "But we were
alive. And we were surviving."
Eventually, Rabbi Nemes ventured
out to help others. "I met up with
another man from our Chabad house,
Shmuel Markovitch who, along with
his three sons, pulled trees from the
road, brought food and water to
neighbors and, helped me start one of
our cars," he wrote. "He gave me the

JNF Facilitates Relief

Israel's EL AL cargo plane, bound to aid
in the Hurricane Katrina relief effort,
touched down in Arkansas at Sept. 8.
Loaded with equipment and baby food
and products, the delivery was made
possible thanks to a Jewish National
Fund/Keren Kayemeth Lelsrael initiative
together with the Israeli government and

keys to a small refrigerated truck nor-
mally used for kosher food and insist-
ed that we use it to leave. They headed
to Memphis to the home of Lubavitch
emissaries there, Rabbi Levi and Rivka
Klein. But for the Nemes family and
many others, the journey is just begin-
ning.
"My good friend Rabbi Nemes and
his wife and children made it out OK,
and now they are involved in major
efforts along with Chabad in New
Orleans," said Rabbi Kasriel Shemtov
of the Shul. "He has agreed to share
his experience and efforts with us in
the hopes that the Detroit Jewish
community will now help the New
Orleans Jewish community." ❑
