Shoebat shared that some Jewish
groups, mentioning national
Hadassah, "have closed doors to me
because I'm not for a two-state solu-
tion."
Rabbi Alon Tolwin, director of Aish
HaTorah of Metropolitan Detroit, the
event's main sponsor, told the audi-
ence he had felt some of the same
rejection. "We ran into nothing but
trouble" finding a venue. "We have to
wake up," he said. "I kept hearing,
`We are afraid of offending our con-
stituency.'"
Security was tight though there was
no threat directed toward the event. A
table outside the doors of the JCC was
set up so people could be greeted
before they went inside.
Shoebat entered Handleman Hall
only after everyone was seated —
and told to remain that way. He
spoke with a security guard on either
side of him, standing about 10 yards
away, and two West Bloomfield
police officers in the room. He is
concerned that his relatives may see
an "honor killing" as a necessary
response to their sense of disgrace.
Not surprisingly, Shoebat isn't opti-
mistic about the chances of Israel gain-
ing from the Gaza withdrawal, para-
phrasing soon-to-be Prime Minister
Winston Churchill's warning about
Adolf Hitler: "We had to choose
between shame and war. We've chosen
shame and we will get war."
"[Arab hatred of Jews] has nothing
to do with occupation. It has some-
thing to do with the death of Jews,"
Shoebat insists. "It has something to
do with the occupation of Palestinian
minds."
Asked about American prospects in
Iraq, he also was short on good news.
"It's a problem that we don't under-
stand the Middle East. We won't be
able to get out. It will be a disaster,"
he said. "If you create a vacuum in the
Middle East, guess what fills it?
Islamic fundamentalism."
Chris Tellis of Southfield attended
the program with about 20 other
members of the Christian Business
Network, an African American group,
which Tellis explains "studies the
Hebrew roots of our faith" and identi-
fies with the Tribe of Ephraim, one of
the 10 lost Israelite tribes.
During the question-and-answer
period, Tellis told Shoebat to be proud
that "you are walking where He, God,
would have you walk."
Tellis told the audience, "We do
have to be a voice. Let people know
where you stand." fl
