1 amie Shapiro, 8, is
the daughter of
Phyllis Shapiro. A
fourth-grade student at
Hillel Day School of
Metropolitan Detroit in
Farmington Hills, Jamie
started a campaign, the
Toy Donation Program, to
collect money for children
affected by Hurricane
Katrina. Donors purchase
gift cards from Target,
Wal-Mart and Toys R Us
in any denomination.
These will then be sent to
families from the Gulf.

How did you come up with
the idea of the Toy
Donation Program? Have
you ever been to New
Orleans, or do you know
any people living in the

area?
"I saw everything on the
news, and it was all under
water. So I really thought
hard of how I could help
and came up with donat-
ing toys.
"I don't know anyone
living there, but I have
been to Biloxi, Miss."

How did you research
before starting the Toy
Donation Program?
"My mom and I went
online and found the city
of Katy, Texas. Katy is
where the Astrodome is
located. We called the
Chamber of Commerce
and spoke with the CEO,
Ann, and found out that
they already have hundreds
of families that have been

transported to Katy and
expect hundreds more.
They said they would be
very thankful for the help.
'Ann suggested that the
best way for these kids to
get the toys they want is to
donate gift cards. The city
of Katy has many volun-
teers who will take the kids
to the store to choose what
they would like."

What are your favorite
subjects at Hillel, and
what activities do you
enjoy outside school?
"I like spelling. I also
like soccer, Tae Kwan Do,
bike riding, skateboarding
and shopping for shoes."

Toy Donation Program?
We have $2,740."
If you could meet the
children left homeless by
the hurricane, what would
you say to them?
"I'm sorry about your
home, and I hope you have
a good rest of the year."

How can people con-
tribute money to your
campaign?
"Please mail donation
cards in any denomination
to:
"Hurricane Katrina Toy
Donation

5942 King James Lane
Waterford, MI 48327"
