Jerusalem/JTA— The Palestinian
Authority refused to safeguard syna-
gogues in the GR7.2 Strip.
Leading rabbis asked Israel's High
Court of Justice on Sunday to stop the
Israeli government from razing 25 syna-
gogues in evacuated Gaza settlements.
In its response, the state said that the
Palestinian Authority had rejected two
requests to guarantee that the Jewish
houses of worship will not be desecrat-
ed by mobs once Israeli troops with-
draw later this month.
The rabbis argued that it would be
preferable for the synagogues to be van-

Jerusalem/JTA— A top Hamas terror-
ist came out of hiding to gloat at
Israel's withdrawal from the Gaza
Strip.
"Now you have left Gaza humiliat-
ed," Mohammed Deif, a bomb maker
for the Islamic terrorist group who
went underground after surviving an
Israeli airstrike two years ago said in a
videotaped message. "Now the Israelis
have all gone to hell," said Deif, his
face hidden.
He vowed that "all of Palestine" —
referring to the West Bank and Israel
— would now "become hell," hinting
that Hamas planned to resume terror-
ist attacks now that Israel's pullout
from Gaza is complete.

Israel and other American allies and
aid recipients overseas are "sitting
on their hands" while one of
America's great cities — New
Orleans — is in crisis.
The Answer
During the first 72 hours of the
crisis, in a letter to President Bush,
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon
offered to send emergency supplies
and personnel to hurricane victims
in New Orleans and the afflicted
Gulf Coast states. As reported by
Israel Insider, Sharon offered to dis-
patch, within a day, medical teams
and trauma units, natural disaster
and public health experts as well as
mobile hospitals, medical kits and
field shelters.

France To Honor Dreyfus
Paris/JTA— France will issue a postage
stamp commemorating the 100th
anniversary of the exoneration of Alfred
Dreyfus.
A Jewish captain in the French army,
Dreyfus was wrongfully.convicted of
treason in 1894 in a trial renowned for
the anti-Semitism it exposed in France.
After serving five years on Devil's
Island off the coast of South America,
Dreyfus was pardoned in late 1899 by
the president of France as a result of
massive intervention in the news
media, and was permitted to return to
Paris. It was not until 1906, however,
that his name was officially cleared and
all charges dismissed.
The founder of modern Zionism,
Theodor Herzl, cited the Dreyfus trial
as a major motivation behind his sup-
port for a Jewish state.
Britain Spied On Jews
London/JTA— Newly released docu-
ments reveal that the British govern-
ment monitored some Jewish groups in
the 1950s over fears that they could be
infiltrated by Communists.
Papers from the National Archives
showed that the British intelligence
agency MI5 investigated the
Association of Jewish Ex-Servicemen
and Women, tapping phone calls and
observing public rallies.
Though the suspicions turned out to
be unfounded, the government believed
the group's opposition to fascism could
make it a prime target for Communist
agitators.
Terrorist Assails Spielberg
Jerusalem/JTA— A Palestinian terrorist
blasted Steven Spielberg for not con-
sulting him for a film on the Munich
Olympics massacre.
Mohammad Daoud, who master-
minded the abduction and killing of 11
Israeli athletes at the 1972 Games, said
the Hollywood director had not con-
tacted him about the upcoming film.
"If someone really wanted to tell the
truth about what happened, he should
talk to the people involved, people who
know the truth," Daoud told Reuters in
an interview from his hideout.
Spielberg has said his film will be fair
to all parties. Veterans of Israel's
Mossad spy agency also have said they
were not consulted on the project.
