ennifer and Bert Green will be celebrating a
special anniversary this month. It was just 10
years ago in late September that a personal ad
in the Jewish News connected the two.
In the fall of 1995, there were no on-line or
instant messaging systems that allowed Jewish sin-
gles to find each other. At the time, the JN used a
very non-technical system.
The process had singles compose a brief message
containing their description and background. The
message was published free of charge. If someone
was interested in the ad, he or she would send a
response to the JN, which would forward the
unopened envelopes.
Bert, then 32, still has a copy of his JN message:
"93.9 by Day. 95.5 by Night [local radio sta-
tions]. Tall, athletic, handsome, successful JM seeks
energetic, upbeat, intelligent JF, 23-30, for laughter,
romance, meaningful conversation, cider and
`Friends.' I'll be there for you."
Jennifer, seven years younger, responded'to Bert's
personal ad on a dare from several girlfriends. "I
mailed my response before I lost my nerve," she said.
