"Adventure" shows a man lost in thought, the lines in his face copied somewhat in the background and the whiteness of his hair and short beard also copied somewhat in the mist behind him. "Back in Time" captures a seasoned building fronted by a long flight of stairs, both covered in part by a cloud- like film. The two images are part of Zalla's MICHIGAN'S ONLY RESTAURANT FEATURED IN THE 2004 TOP RESTAURANT ISSUE OF BON APPETIT Contemporary but still approachable, it's the kind of food that's too rare in metro Detroit. – Detroit Free Press Keego Harbor's simple but elegant Jeremy Restaurant and Bar lavishes attention on every dish that's created. - 1- JOUR Detrou Magaznie .skirvir Linda Zalla with "Respect for the Past" J exhibit "Remember ... Respect ... and Record," which will be on view Sept. 10-Oct. 8 at the Cary Gallery in Rochester. She has promised one project from the series to Kadima, an organiza- tion that assists the mentally ill. "I think it's important to pay more attention to the past," says Zalla, 63, of Bloomfield Hills, whose interest in time gone by was nurtured through involvement with the Jewish Historical Society and trips to the ancient areas of Israel, Greece and Turkey. I also am fascinated by the aging facades of buildings and the layers of history inherent in them, and I'd like to see them renovated and restored to their original glory." Zalla, who likes to bring texture to her paintings, creates layers that relate to both the levels of memory and the levels of structures built up and changed through generations. The artist earned her bachelor's degree from Wayne State University and her master's at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit. She has participated in solo and group exhibi- tions locally and in other states and is represented in business col- lections, such as the Sheraton Oaks Hotel in Novi and Kimberly Jewelers in Troy. "I like water media because I think the fluidity conveys more emotions and feelings," says the artist, who works out of a home studio and travels with a sketchpad. "I burn the edges of paper that I use to build layers to give old-world or antique effects." Zalla defines the elderly as those having reached their 80th birthday. She defines ancient buildings as those over 100 years old. "None of my work is totally literal," she says. The past is cloudy and so my images are blurred." ❑ Remember ...
