EAT! DRINK! BE MERRY! mother's Catholic traditions and his father's Jewish ones. "I celebrated Christmas, Passover, Easter, Yom Kippur. I wasn't baptized or bar mitz- vah. I was raised in both, not commit- ted to either. I can't ignore the 6,000 years of Sephardic Jewish blood cours- ing through my veins, but I also never feel safer than when I'm in St. Patrick's Cathedral on Christmas Eve in Montreal." The Canadian city is still home — he stays with friends, at a hotel or fur- nished apartment while working in L.A. — and intends to make his own movies there. "All I've ever wanted to do is be a writer-director, since I was 9 years old. I want to retire out of this game by the time I'm 30, ideally," says Baruchel, 23. "And money goes a lot further back home. " Commander In Chief 9 p.m. Tuesdays, ABC premieres Sept. 27 She grew up in Malibu and in show- biz, but now Caitlin Wachs has moved to an even more famous address: 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Wachs, 16, plays Rebecca Allen, daughter of the first female U.S. presi- ° dent (Geena Davis). It's a position she wouldn't want in Caitlin Wachs real life. "With the Secret Service there, you can't do any- thing. I'd probably screw up the first day and do something wrong," she says, though she's enjoying the role. Wachs, whose credits include Thirteen Days, The Divine Secrets of the NI-Ya Sisterhood My Dog Skip, and TV's Family Affair and Cracking Up, is Jewish on her dad's side. "My mom is Catholic, but I was raised with both. My family looks at Jesus Christ as a great teacher and Moses as amazing, too. We believe in the higher power and the greater good." Head Cases 9 p.m. Wednesdays, Fox premieres Sept. 14 In a show about two mentally unsta- ble lawyers, Adam Goldberg plays the wackier of the two, given to explosive outbursts of behavior. "It becomes very cathartic because I get to work out many of my personal problems on television," he says. Known for his work in Saving Private Ryan and The Hebrew Hammer, Goldberg has several upcom- ing films, including Man About Town with Ben Affleck, the thriller Stay Alive (he plays another lawyer), and Lucky 13, a bar mitzvah comedy. "But I don't play Jewish in that," he notes. Richard Kind was working on Broadway in The Producers when he got a call about joining Head Cases as paralegal Lou Albertini. "This fell into my lap. I'm the luckiest guy," says the father of three, best known for his roles in Mad About You and Spin City. In other fall notes, Evan Handler (Sex and the City) supports another quartet of women in ABC's Hot Properties, premiering 9:30 p.m. Oct. 7.
