Times reports that rising rents in the Fairfax district, the most Jewish neighborhood of Los Angeles, are forcing many stores out, including the somewhat famous Hatikvah Music store (although Internet music sales will continue). Founded in the 1940s, Hatikvah has the largest Jewish music inven- tory for sale anywhere. The store used to also sell pop-rock records and famous rock composer-producer STEVE BARRI (born Steve Lipkin) once clerked there. Barri went on to write such hits as "Secret Agent Man." SIMON RUTBERG, who began as a clerk in 1964, and bought the store in 1989, lament- ed the passing of a neighbor- hood fixture where celebs Wilson like CARL REINER still shop. Where else, Rutberg noted, could you find the record of Detroit music legend JACKIE WILSON singing "My Yiddishe Momma." Rutberg, by the way, was a great friend of Wilson's and he told me all about Wilson's not-widely-known conversion to Judaism. (The Detroit Jewish News wrote about Wilson and Rutberg in the cover package on Jan. 31, 2003).
