Weinstein says people have compared
him to Job, the biblical character
whose faith was tested by a series of
tragedies heaped upon him by God.
According to the story, Job was
rewarded in the end for his acceptance
and unwavering faith.
"There are different interpretations
of Job," said Weinstein. "All I can say
is that Job didn't ask why, and neither
do I. The 'why' doesn't matter. I don't
look to God to blame or to change
things. When you're not attached to
the story, you can move on in a more
powerful way.
"What's impiessed me is just how
strong Gary is," said attorney Sklar,
who has worked closely with
Weinstein since the fire. "He's clicked
into a mode about doing what needs
to be done, and he has tremendous
concern for his customers and for the
people who work for him."
Rabbi Tamara Kolton of the
Birmingham Temple, where the family
belonged, has been an ongoing source
of support to Weinstein since the acci-
dent.
"The universe is random and can
sometimes feel insane," said Rabbi
Kolton. "What's keeping Gary sane are
his own inner resources, which are
tremendous, and love. He's been a
teacher to me. The question of 'why' is
just an abyss. The real question is how
do we live, and the answer is, 'with
love.'"
"What has become very clear 'to me
since the fire is the outpouring of love
I have received," Weinstein said. "I
knew it after the accident, but now I
truly know that I am loved and
blessed. I feel stronger and more ful-
filled than ever before."
