Working out to a Jewish beat.
BY FRANCESCA LUNZER KRITZ
W
ant the ultimate cardio
workout? Dance the
entire first set of an
Orthodox wedding. The upbeat
music and aerobic footwork will easily
burn off the smorgasbord you just ate.
Second best? Pick up a copy of J-
Walking, a collection of fast-paced
classic and contemporary Jewish
music. Featuring the New York-based
Neshoma Orchestra, the band of
choice for many of those weddings
adds speed to tunes by such popular
artists as Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach and
Israeli band Reva L'Sheva.
The CD is the brainchild of veteran
walker and Neshoma executive Renee
Sojcher, whose husband, Michael, is a
founding member and co-owner of
Neshoma. Renee wanted something
new for her 5:30 a.m. treadmill treks
and enlisted the expertise of her hus-
band along with Neshoma musicians
Dov Katz and John Tendy (who pro-
duces exercise soundtracks in his own
studio) and personal trainer Atara
Weisberger, who wrote the exercise
instructions on the CD jacket.
The disc runs just over an hour,
which is also the government's new
recommendation for how much exer-
cise adults should get on most days.
(If you're just up off the couch, start
slow, in 15-minute increments, build-
ing up to your daily workout. And,
check with your doctor. Many experts
say consistently exercising 30 minutes
per day may be all you need.)
What makes J-Walking a mover and
shaker is that the whole CD can be
used for a workout. While many
Jewish music CDs by such popular
artists as Yehuda! and Shlomo Simcha
lend themselves to fast walking, you
must interrupt your workout to skip
over the slow tunes and get to the
faster ones.
On .1-Walking, song paces start at
about 124 beats per minute and work
up to 138 beats per minute in Slonim
niggun, or melody, that will get you
moving. The 10 songs in between will
all let you walk a pace about 3V2 to 4'/2
miles per hour, said Sojcher. The
cool-down track, "Tov" (102 bpm)
may also be used as a warm-up.
J-Walking II, slated for a fall release,
should pick up the pace even more,
with songs reaching 140 bpm or higher.
Find J-Walking, about $16, at Jewish
music stores or at Neshoma's Web site,
www.neshomaorchestra.com .
