Expires 9/30/05 emerging zoonotic or vector-borne (those passed from animals to people) diseases in the state. Whether the dis- ease is a potential threat or, more like- ly, just a case or two in a defined area (as with the black-legged tick), Foster is there to educate. "My overriding drive is to help peo- ple not get ill from these preventable diseases," he says. This may mean speaking to public groups or answering any number of daily inquiries, often of the "I've got a headache. Do you think I have Ebola?" variety. Foster's specialty is arthropods, specifically those that affect human health. Among the creatures in the arthropod family are mosquitoes, ticks and cockroaches. Even Foster admits the latter belong in the "creepy" cate- gory, but he watches them because they shed, which means they can cause severe problems for those with certain allergies or asthma. Foster, who describes himself as "a total bug nerd," struggles when asked to name a favorite. "They're all interesting," he says, pausing. "Well," he finally concedes, "one of my all-time favorites is still the honeybee." He cites the bee's vital role in pollinating crops. "Without the Do you know a fascinating person with a local connection who others might like to read about? Let us know! Send an e-mail with the name, phone number honeybee," he says, "a lot of food sim- ply wouldn't grow." He also appreciates the bees' social structure. "It's interesting among insects, because they're one of the few, along with termites and ants, that has a social colony. Most insects live by an individual struggle for survival, but the honeybee is altruistic. "It goes into the hive and starts dancing around to tell the other bees, `There's a great food source over there' and tells exactly where it is. It could even be miles away, and they'll all go out and bring it back to the hive." What Foster does not enjoy when it comes to bugs: sending them to that great, big bughouse in the sky. "Except for centipedes," he says. "I don't mind killing these — or mos- quitoes and flies." He would kill other bugs for his wife, Kristin, whom he met at EMU, and his two children — but that's about it. "'When I was in school, I had to make a collection of bugs for study and, to get them, of course, I had to ... his voice trails. He did it then, but the more time passes, he says, "I really have a hard time killing them any- more." ❑ ,' and reason this person is interesting (along with your own name and phone number) to Lynne Konstantin at lkonstantin@thejewishnews.com .
