The New York cast of 'Altar Boyz"
musical conductor of Broadway's
Avenue Q, will be attending opening
night with his Berkley High prom
date, Brenda Silverman of Huntington
Woods.
Adler joined the Altar Boyz creative
team at the invitation of Davenport,
who worked with Adler on a touring
version of Jeckyll & Hyde.
"I originally was the arranger for
Altar Boyz, which has changed so
much since work on it began in
2001," explains Adler, 39. "It started
out as a concert, but it grew into a
production about friendship and rela-
tionships with all original music."
Adler, who has been musical director
of The Radio City Christmas
Spectacular in Detroit, was raised as a
Catholic, but he learned about the
Jewish culture through his neighbors.
His song "Everybody Fits," vocalized
by Abraham, is about all people being
part of God's family, he says.
Adler's other songs include "The
Calling," "Something About You,'
"We Are the Altar Boyz," "Church
Rulez" and "La Vida Eternal." The
other six songs were written, by
Michael Patrick Walker.
"This is the first time I've written
music for a show," says Adler, whose
late mother was a band singer and
whose late father was a trombonist.
The composer, who has been musical
director of The Fantasticks and Chicago
City Limits, contributed one song to
Martin Charnin's The Next to the Last
Revue.
"Huntington Woods really was a
nice mix, and Altar Boyz was devel-
oped to appeal to a wide-ranging audi-
ence," says Adler, who graduated from
the University of Michigan, starting
out as a music composition major and
changing to piano performance.
"Although it's about musical perform-
ers, there's something of the Marx
Brotheri in the characters."
