Literacy Workshop Slated

New and veteran volunteers will gain
hands-on techniques for successful
tutoring at a Detroit Jewish Coalition
for Literacy (DJCL) workshop to be
held from 4-6 p.m., Wednesday, Sept.
14, at the Max M. Fisher Federation
Building in Bloomfield Township.
Mary Masson, early childhood edu-
cation consultant at Oakland Schools,
will inform volunteers how to help at-
risk learners make meaningful connec-
tions with text. Free books for DJCL
students, many of whom have never
owned a book, will be distributed to
the volunteers at the workshop.
Council board members Irma Glaser
and SallyJo Levine co-chair the DJCL,
an affiliate of the National Jewish
Coalition for Literacy.

the Harvard Graduate School of
Education's Principals' Center.
The AVI CHAT Foundation, a New
York-based private foundation dedicat-
ed to promoting Jewish commitment,
sponsored the attendance of Rabbi
Buckman and 16 other day school
principals from around the country to
help address the professional develop-
ment needs of rapidly growing Jewish
day schools.
Participants attended lectures and
discussion groups led by Harvard fac-
ulty, educational consultants and
school practitioners.

Entrepreneurship Is Focus

Technion Professor Dan Shechtman
will speak at ePrize Headquarters, 1
Eprize Drive in Pleasant Ridge,
Sunday, Sept. 11, at 7 p.m.
`E' Course: Entrepreneurship 101 is
a seminar on "Innovation: A
Changing Landscape," offering lessons
and applications from the Technion.
Shechtman, a member of the Israel
Academy of Sciences and the American
National Academy of Engineering,
holds a Philip Tobias Chair in the
Materials Sciences in the Technion
Faculty of Materials. Engineering.

Hillel Holds Golf Classic

The 10th annual Hillel Day School
Golf Classic will be held Monday,
Sept. 19, at Franklin Hills Country
Club. Nolan Finley of the Detroit
News Editorial Page will be the guest
speaker at a barbecue dinner.
The women's nine-hole tournament
will begin with registration and conti-
nental breakfast at 8:45 a.m. with a
9:30 a.m. shotgun start. Registration
for the 18-hole event will begin at
11:30 a.m. with a 1 p.m. shotgun start.
Lunch and dinner are included for
all participants.
The cost for the nine-hole event is
$180 and $300 per person for the 18-
hole tournament; dinner only is $50
per person. Sponsorship opportunities
are available. All proceeds from the
golf outing benefit scholarship assis-
tance.
