and every day. It is important to real-
ize that even though Danny does not
always have the words to express him-
self properly, he still has the same
emotions, desires and needs as any
other human being. For example,
Danny is tremendously pleased when
others say hello to him in the hallway.
Simple as these interactions may be,
they tell him that others recognize and
care about him.
Moreover, an effortless greeting lets
Danny know that he is not without
friends.

Going To School

Some may question Danny's position
at JAMD. What is the point of having
Danny in a school that is noted for its
superior education if he has trouble
mustering a brief salutation?
Truthfully, I do not see a purpose
in having Danny in a school whose
sole mission is to develop and stimu-
late intellect. Fortunately for Danny,
JAMD is much more than just an
institution created to enhance brain-
power. Although JAMD is renowned
for its standard of academic excel-
lence, JAMD also seeks to and suc-
ceeds in helping young, Jewish adults
to be well-rounded, self-aware and

socially conscious individuals. For
instance, it is from being at school
every day that Danny has learned the
distinction between appropriate and
inappropriate behavior.
Because of the combined efforts of
Danny's mom and JAMD, he has
been given the chance to fulfill his
potential as a Jewish teen.
Ironically, despite Danny's academ-
ic difficulty, he has proven to be an
effective teacher. In a world that
demands perfection 100 percent of
the time, he has taught me, his para-
professional, that to be fallible and
make mistakes is a good thing. If we
were all perfect beings, it would be
impossible for us to improve or strive
to better ourselves.
Danny has also taught me to have a
greater appreciation for the smaller,
more ordinary things in life that I
might otherwise take for granted,
such as having a friend say hello, or
understanding a Hebrew lesson.
Lastly, Danny has taught me that
most limitations are man-made. With
a positive outlook and a persistent atti-
tude, both of which can be seen in
Danny and in the administration of
JAMD, just about any dream can
become a reality. ❑
