Composer Marc Shaiman
(Hairspray) said that as a young boy,
he had a crush on Dick Gautier, the
man who played Hymie the Robot
on Get Smart. "Hymie made me feel
funny. I thought about him when I
went to bed."
The majority of Trachtenberg's
subjects are "ordinary" people, like
the boy whose father tossed a foot-
ball with the child's brothers in the
front yard while he sat alone and
watched. He wanted to pick flowers
instead.
One man said he knew when he
was 8, when he began hiding a purse
under his bed and filled it with
everything a sensible girl might
need." A woman said she knew she
was gay during her 20s, when "I
kept waking up with women."
Another man said he was attracted
to boys from the time he was 5, but
he did not know what it meant until
he was 17, when his teacher, the
coach of the football team, lead a
discussion about "queers." The boys
wanted to punch these queers, and
the girls wanted to save them
because they were "sick. ... They
need help." Right then and there,
the boy knew they were talking
about him.
A boy, at age 8, figured it out
while playing hopscotch on the
street. His dad and a friend were

Brett Freedman, hair/makeup artist:
"My family — Mom, Dad, Dee Dee
and I — were in the family room
watching television. Dee Dee was mak-
ing up one of those big Barbie heads ...
she was doing everything wrong. ... I
screamed out, Dee Dee! You can't part
her hair on the side! She has a heart-
shaped facer"

The book's cover photo is of Michael
Grana, who at age 10, in 1963, was
infatuated with Barbra Streisand.
Caught by the maid in the bathroom
with black eyeliner practicing drawing
Streisand's Nefertiti-like eye extensions,
she said, "You should meet my nephew
Bobby. You two would get along."

watching when the friend said, "I
think you got a problem."

Positive Reaction

Trachtenberg has been thrilled with
the positive attention the book has
given to the gay and lesbian commu-
nity.
After handling the press and man-
aging crises for such Hollywood
names as Whoopi Goldberg,
Cameron Diaz and Phil Rosenthal,
the creator of Everybody Loves
Raymond, Bragman is sharing the
stage with - his clients for the first
time.
Trachtenberg and Bragman have
been interviewed for TV, newspapers
and radio shows. Bragman can't
believe how much his phone has
been ringing. He is glad the book is
prompting deeper, thought-provok-
ing stories, some featuring men and
women who are gay and their par-
ents.
"The great thing about this book
is that it is a statement, and that is
not what Robert set out to do," says
Bragman, 49. "Robert's book says so
much about who we are as people. It
shows that being gay is not a choice
but an integral part of who we are."
When he was growing up,
Bragman felt out of place. But he
didn't know why. "I was fat, gay,
Jewish and living in Flint," he says.
"I was like a triple outsider."
Today, life is good for Bragman,
and he hasn't felt out of place in
decades. "I'm not fat, I'm still Jewish
and gay — and I'm successful." II
