Learn In Birmingham

A full program of Jewish adult educa-
tion is being launched in downtown
Birmingham this September with
introductory classes in Kabbalah,
Talmudic law and Hebrew, hosted at
the public library and the
Community House.
The classes are being presented by
the Birmingham-Bloomfield Chai
Center and taught by Rabbi Boruch
Cohen, spiritual leader of the center
and a Birmingham resident.
The following courses will be
offered:
• "A 5,000-Year-Old Language in
Five Easy Lessons: Learn-to-Read-
Hebrew Crash Course" will be held at
7:30 p.m. on five Wednesdays starting
Aug. 31 at the Baldwin Public
Library. The cost is $20.
• "An Introduction to Talmud for
Lawyers & Other Keen Legal Minds"
is set for 7:30 p.m. on three Tuesdays,
Sept. 6, 13, 27, at the Baldwin
Library. There is no charge.
• "Pop Goes Kabbalah: An
Introduction to Jewish Mysticism" is a
three-part lecture series at 8 p.m.
Thursdays, Sept. 8, 15, 22, at the
Community House. The cost is $25
per person or $40 for two.

Semitism in Michigan, Kellman
said, "I continue not to understand
why it is necessary to give a man
like Farrakhan the respect that he
gets. There are other role models in
the African American community
who actually deserve the respect of
all people who are not anti-Semitic
and believe in equality and respect
of all people.
Kellman also expressed concern
about the Millions More
Movement in light of Farrakhan's
continuing divisive rhetoric and his
naming Malik Zulu Shabazz as co-
convener of the movement.
Kellman called Shabazz, leader of
the New Black Panther Party, "anti-
Semitic and racist," charging he has
openly and often vilified the Jews
saying that the 'Talmud teaches
that black people are cursed' and
Jewish rabbis 'set the stage for the
African holocaust.'"
