W his typical mix of black empowerment and anti-white rhetoric. "We cannot be carbon copies of our former slave owners," Farrakhan told the crowd of 100 people in council chambers. "We can never duplicate their corruption and immorality. What they can get away with we shouldn't even try ... You'll only be a carbon copy of that which God has already set his hand against." And then he made an appeal to a huge conspiracy with unnamed evil behind it: "A few greedy ones have taken control of the government of the United States of America" and become "the stewards of human life," he said to the approving crowd. Mayor Kilpatrick sat in the first row, attentive and quiet, as Farrakhan gave him campaign advice. "Don't come into office like the white mayors," he told Kilpatrick, who sat with his chin in his palm as the audience applauded. After damning the news media and educational system — "You can't tell your kids to stay in school, it's like telling your kids to stay in the crack house" — he urged Kilpatrick to stand on his record and suggested a new model of governance and education that, while generally unclear, clearly had Farrakhan right near the top. Then came the obligatory denial of being anti-Semitic, anti-white, anti- American and homophobic even though this is what "they" call him. Louis Farrakhan came to Detroit on Aug. 15-16 to build support for the launching of the Millions More Movement at a rally in Washington, D.C., set for Oct. 15 — the 10th anniversary of the Million Man March — Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick seemed to be everywhere with him. According to press reports, both Farrakhan and Kilpatrick attended a clergy meeting at Bethany Baptist Church, a special session of the Detroit City Council, a gathering of 3,000 people at Detroit NAACP President Rev. Wendell Anthony's Fellowship Chapel and a meeting of political leaders and activists at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. At the council session, now being rebroadcast almost daily on Detroit's cable Channel 10, Kilpatrick present- ed Farrakhan with the key to the city, saying he was "spiritually filled" after hearing him and telling him, "You not only have the key to the city, but the key to our hearts and minds as well." The meeting began with council member JoAnn Watson heaping superlatives while presenting Farrakhan with a proclamation endorsing his Millions More Movement and giving him a Spirit of Detroit award. Fellow council mem- bers Kenneth Cockrel Jr., Alberta Tinsley-Talabi and Alonzo Bates attended with Watson. Farrakhan used the forum to peddle AUD EWE BREAK 7100 Orchard Lake Road, W.
