treatment for cancer, Mr. Zieve and
more than 500 of his admirers enjoyed
the Michigan Opera Theatre world pre-
miere of his "magnum opus" Higginson!
An American Life, a musical for which
he composed the score and former
Detroiter Esther M. Broner wrote the
book and lyrics. His "great work" was
performed at the Detroit Opera House.
Recalled Horwitz, "One of my fond-
est memories was having Mort and his
dear wife, Mary Lou, to our house for
dinner shortly after it was discovered
that his cancer had returned and having
him perform on our piano some of the
tunes from his magnum opus. I can still
see our daughter Stephanie's jaw drop to
the floor when this 'old man' opened his
mouth to sing — as tears ran down
everyone's cheeks."
"Mort was one of the most creative
individuals I have ever worked with,"
said David DiChiera, founder and gen-
eral director of the Michigan Opera
Theatre. "His passion for the arts, com-
bined with a wonderful sense of humor,
has been a source of pleasure for almost
40 years."

Mr. Zieve had a long history of commu-
nity involvement, with special emphasis
on the dramatic and musical arts. He

He is survived by his wife, Anne;
daughter, Janice (Scott) Foust of
Cypress, Calif.; sons, Mark (Marla)
of West Bloomfield, and Michael of
Aptos, Calif.; brother, Paul (Esta-
Jean) of Needham, Mass.; grandchil-
dren, Andrew and Sara Cahn,
Nicole and Rachel Foust.

HERMAN CHAPIN, 90, of
Florida, formerly of Detroit, died
Aug. 9, 2005. He was educated in
the Detroit public schools and
received a bachelor's and master's
degree from Wayne State University.
A well known figure in the music
business for two decades, Mr.

served on the board of directors of the
Michigan Opera Theatre for 25 years.
He was a longtime supporter of the
Center for Peace and Conflict Studies at
Wayne State University and composed
songs for the center on several occasions.

included the Detroit Historical
Museums, Karmanos Cancer Institute
in Detroit, Muscular Dystrophy
Association, Eton Academy in
Birmingham and the Holocaust
Memorial Center in Farmington Hills.
Mr. Zieve was also a member of Temple
Beth El and Congregation Chaye Olam.
In 1998, he and Mary Lou received
the Distinguished Jewish Community
Service Award from the American
Jewish Committee.
The Michigan Cancer Foundation
Partners group presented the Zieves
with its annual appreciation award for
their help in the community's battle
against cancer. They also received the
Lifetime Achievement Award from the
National Association of Television Arts
and Sciences.
Morton Zieve is survived by his wife,
Mary Lou; son, Robert Zieve; daughter
and son-in-law, Melissa Zieve and
Michael Miller of Massachusetts; grand-
children, Sara Zieve Miller, Julia Zieve
Miller; sister, Phyllis Friedman.
He was the dear brother of the late
Miriam Chait and the late Janet Rich.
Interment was at Beth El Memorial
Park. Contributions may be made to the
Hospice Program at Karmanos Cancer
Institute. Arrangements by Ira Kaufman
Chapel.

Chapin owned several record stores
in Detroit-area malls. In 1965, he
sold his record business and returned
to college. For 25 years, he was
employed as a humanities professor
at Macomb Community College. He
was also the recipient of several
awards for excellent teaching.
As a jazz aficionado and lover of
classical music, Mr. Chapin was a
familiar face at most Detroit-area
concerts and music performances.
He was also a member of several
book and discussion groups, includ-
ing ones at the Institute for Retired
Professionals at the Jewish
Community Center. Mr. Chapin was
also a member of the ACLU, the
Southern Poverty Law Center, the
Florida Historical Society and
numerous other political and cultur-
al organizations.
He is survived by his daughters
