Roberts On School Prayer
Washington/JTA — Supreme Court
nominee John Roberts backed a
moment of silent prayer in the public
schools. While working in the Justice
Department for the Reagan administra-
tion in 1985, Roberts wrote in a memo
to his supervisor that he would not
object to a constitutional amendment
on school prayer.
Referring to a Supreme Court ruling
that struck down a school prayer law in
Alabama, Roberts wrote that the idea
that the "Constitution prohibits such a
moment of silent reflection — or even
silent 'prayer' — seems indefensible."
The memo was among nearly 5,400
pages of records pertaining to the
Supreme Court nominee released by the
Ronald Reagan Presidential Library.
Daylight Time Extended
Washington/JTA — President Bush
signed into law an energy bill that
extends daylight-saving time.
The bill was originally to have extend-
ed daylight-saving time by two months,
but the U.S. House of Representatives
and the Senate compromised at the last
moment and settled on a one-month
extension: three weeks in March and a
week in November. Jewish groups had
joined with others, including farmers
and parents groups, in opposing longer
extensions. Observant Jews were partic-
ularly concerned that, with 8:30 a.m.
sunrises, they would be late for work if
they said morning prayers.
Comp Time For Shabbat
Washington/JTA— The U.S. govern-
ment has changed regulations to allow
part-time federal employees to use comp
time to take off for Sabbath and other
Jewish observances. Observant employ-
ees had been allowed to bank comp
time instead of earning overtime wages
in order to take off time for holidays,
but the Office of Personnel
Management recently changed the poli-
cy for part-time employees.

Divestment Urged
New York/JTA — The Presbyterian
Church said it would press four
American companies to stop providing
equipment and technology to Israel.
The church said it had selected
Caterpillar, Motorola, ITT Industries
and United Technologies for possible
divestment if the companies refuse to
stop doing business with Israel. Jewish
groups criticized the move as unfairly
singling out Israel without helping the
Palestinians. The move is the latest by
mainline Protestant churches regarding
divestment from Israel. The
Presbyterians also said they would pres-
sure Citigroup because of its alleged
connection to an Arab bank believed to
have ties to suicide bombers.
