10 young power players. NATALIE
PORTMAN, 24, hot off another Star
Wars pic, is No. 6 on the power list.
Close behind are actor JAKE GYLLEN-
HAAL, 24, who scored the No. 7 spot
and actress SCARLETT JOHANN-
SON, 20, who was ranked No. 9. (The
latter two have
Jewish mothers.)
Meanwhile, actor

JOSH ZUCKER-
MAN, 20, has a nice
supporting role in
"Pretty Persuasion,"
an Evan Rachel
Wood-starring teen
Natalie Portman
film scheduled to
open Aug. 26 in
Detroit. Zuckerman is probably best
known as "the young Dr. Evil" in the
last Austin Powers movie.
While he has earned praise for his TV
guest shots, Josh is only 5 feet 6 inches,
so he may find it hard to get roles when
he gets older. But maybe he'll get lucky,
like the equally short DUSTIN HOFF-
MAN. (Michigan native SELMA
BLAIR also co-stars in "Pretty
Persuasion.")

Weeds

A couple of weeks ago, Showtime cable
began its new series, Weeds, starring
Mary Louise Parker as a suburban
mother who finds herself suddenly wid-
owed and decides to maintain her com-
fortable family life by selling marijuana
to her neighbors.
"Weeds" was created and is written by

JENJI KOHAN, a veteran comedy
writer whose brother DAVID, co-creat-
ed Will and Grace.
I found Weeds to be several cuts above
most sit-corns and worth watching. If
you don't get Showtime — don't worry
— their series are on DVD within a year.

ODonnellsky

In case you hadn't heard, Irish Catholic
actress and lesbian activist Rosie
O'Donnell is the unlikely, but fairly
clever choice to take over next month
the role of Golde, Teyve's wife, in the
current Broadway revival of Fiddler on

the Roof.
Clever because, first of all, O'Donnell
proved she could sing in other Broad-
way shows. Moreover, the show has
empty seats and has only earned back
half its cost so far. Adding a "big name"
like O'Donnell will fill many seats.
The casting alone has earned the show
millions in publicity. Everyone is saying
how "interesting" it is to have two gay
performers (HARVEY FIERSTEIN as
Teyve and O'Donnell) as the leads. No
doubt, the curious will turnout to see
the new Anatevka, the most bohemian
shed in Eastern Europe.
But if there are still empty seats, my
guess is the next moves are Diana Ross
as Yenta the Matchmaker and the still-
boyish Donnie Osmond as Motel, the
tailor. Lots of "crossover appeal" with
these performers.
