Rachel DeWoskin: "The
Jews value education and
family, just like the
Chinese."

in Beijing, a series with 600 million
viewers.
DeWoskin's character, Jiexi, breaks
up a Chinese man's marriage to his
loyal wife and ends up moving with
him to the United States. In the
book, DeWoskin describes her dis-
comfort at being filmed scantily
dressed and passionately embracing
her Chinese boyfriend. She was

actress attended professional children's
school and spent a year at Finch

press, which said she had played into
Chinese stereotypes about loose
American women. But DeWoskin,
while acknowledging that her charac-
ter was stereotyped, argues that the
overall message of the show is com-
plex.
Although Jiexi did break up a mar-
riage, she is shown to be genuinely in
love with her new Chinese husband,
and their move to America is sympa-
thetically portrayed. Says DeWoskin,
"The message was that the engage-
ment [of China] with the West is
inevitable and long-term, and that

But early on in her career, the actress
had to change her surname — to
Kristin from Schatz — to nab a non-
