Professional Enhances Senior Living r or outstanding professional service to the community, Marsha Goldsmith Kamin, executive director of Jewish Apartments & Services, has been cited with the 2005 Mandell L. and Madeleine H. Berman Award. The award recognizes outstanding contributions of communal profes- sionals employed by the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, its partner agencies and beneficiaries Presentation of the award is sched- uled for Aug. 24 at the meeting of the combined boards of the Jewish Federation and United Jewish Foundation. Kamin is described by her col- leagues as caring and compassionate, with a quiet dignity touching the hearts of hundreds of older adults and their families. She was cited as "a consummate professional, a con- sensus builder, creative dreamer and an unwavering proponent of all that makes life rich and good for the eld- erly in the Jewish community." In the 14 years of her stewardship, the number of apartments available has grown 57 percent, now serving 860 older adults. As executive direc- tor, she has overseen the construc- tion of the second phase of Hechtman Apartments, both phases of the Meer Apartments and the Mondry Administrative Building. She has built a dedicated staff and has obtained millions of dollars in HUD grants for development of assisted living floors and expansion of staffing and services at Prentis Apartments. She has won national acclaim for innovative programs, including a model prescription drug program; J-Care, an independent business providing in-home assis- Marsha Goldsmith Kamin tance for daily living; and 8 Over 80, an annual celebration of senior citizens. She also has instituted teen mitz- vah projects with Hebrew schools, teen community service projects with public schools, programs with surrounding synagogues, Federation's Neighborhood Project and Oak Park residents. Janet Birkrant Levine, a member of the JAS executive committee, said, "The real testament to Marsha's contribution comes from our Jewish Apartments residents. At a recent meeting of Federation's Women's Department hosted at Meer Apartments, one of the residents spoke of the joy and gratitude she feels at having so wonderful and warm a place to live. There wasn't a dry eye in the house." Marsha Goldsmith Kamin lives in Huntington Woods with husband, Mark.
