Sompthing Extra Doer Profile re - City: Sct:a_.. Kudos: A Goad .11:Ivezy As the ofJzcial "Sunshine" for the Southfield Chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons, Dorothy Goldberg is well named. The 91-year-old resident of the Fountains of Franklin spends at least 20 hours a week spreading smiles and providing needed help to a wide variety of local organizations. Goldberg, who was born in Toronto, began her volun- teer career as a young woman, serving as president of the ladies chapter of Folks Farein, a Canadian charitable organization. She came to Detroit in 1943 at the urging of a cousin who convinced her to leave her Canadian "hick town" for the "big city" in the United States. While volunteeringfor the local USO, she met soldier Alex Farber. They married and had a son, Ronald. Farber diech however, when their son was still a baby. She later married Sol Goldberg Goldberg accelerated her volunteer work after Sol died in 1979 and after her son moved to New York, where he now lives with his wife, Linda. Today her many activities include calling bingo and serving as the Friday night "shammas" at the Fountains, running bingo games for the Oak Park Community Center's 50-Up Club, which she helped found and partic- ipating with the Jewish War Veterans. She recently added a new position to her roster, treasurer of the Chazakah Young-at-Heart senior club at Adat Shalom Synagogue. Goldberg, a member of Temple Emanu-El in Oak Park, is also very active in the Cooperative Council of Jewish Women's Organizations, which sponsors Chanukah and Passover celebrations for JARC (adults with develop- mental disabilities) and Kadima (adults with mental ill- ness) residents and donates funds to local Jewish people in need of assistance. Was helping other people part of your family's values when you were young? "Yes, almost every night at the dinner table someone would come to our door with a container for my father to fill up with food, dill pickles that he made himself and all kinds of other things. I had five sisters and one brother, who are all gone now, and I was usually the one who took care of them when they were sick. "I do at least one good deed every day, and each night I put a coin in a tzedakah box that I give to the Lubavitch Foundation." Do you have a favorite volunteer activity? "They're all important. When I can help out and make somebody happy, that's very rewarding. Working with the Greater Detroit Moving Picture and Dorothy Goldberg Television Council [she's a past president] is very inter- esting. We meet once a month to critique movies, and we give scholarships to local people who are involved in the arts." How do you keep track of your busy schedule? "I have two different calendars, plus a daily list of all my activities. And so far, my memory is still pretty good." — Ronelle Grier, special writer REPORT A DOER...:Know a Doer — someone of any age doing interesting, meaningful things in their life outside of their job?
