Ask The Orthodontist

Parents frequently ask about
"Gaps between teeth especially in the front."

If parents wish to close the gap between the front teeth, the
reason for the spacing must first be determined before the best
method of correction can be decided upon. In the majority of
cases, the cause is developmental. As the teeth erupt there is
simply more room than is needed to accommodate them. As a
result, gaps may appear. Another reason that gaps might appear in
the upper front teeth relates to the muscle attachment (frenum)
found between the upper lip and the upper dental arch in the

area of the two front teeth. It sometimes happens that very

large or fibrous attachments may contribute to splaying of the
two front teeth. Once these causes are addressed, corrected, or at least recognized, the
orthodontist may then close the gap by utilizing the long term
procedure of orthondtically moving the teeth together.

Timing of treatment, and the cause and nature of the gaps
is critical. Age and development play an important role as
sometimes spacing is a natural development. Therefore it
is acutely important for the orthodontist to play a role in
determining treatment. In some individuals depending
upon the size of the teeth, the bite, and taking into
account the entire mouth, cosmetic banding may be an
answer. Most of the time is best to set up a consultation
with an orthodontic specialist.

Everyone wants a beautiful smile and everyone ought to
have a healthy one. The orthodontist's goal is to achieve
both for the patient. The importance of an active smile
should not be underestimated.
