sther Kleid of Oak Park
admitted to worries about
the early part of her relation-
ship with Rabbi Jose Gomez. They
had very different personalities.
"I'm more outgoing and talk a lot.
He doesn't," she recalled after they
met late last summer.
Jose admits he is the more quiet
one, but he was attracted to her out-
going personality.
Esther, 26, said their first contacts
were strained, but only five months
after they met they were engaged.
Esther won't forget the proposal.
"Jose was at my parents' home (where
she lives) when I came home from
work (she is an administrative assis-
tant at the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroi). Before I could
take my coat off, Jose, very nervous,
came over to me and asked me very
quickly to marry him."
She accepted, and they will wed
Aug. 21.

Esther, who describes herself as
modern Orthodox, said meeting a
rabbi "threw me a little bit."
She was a little concerned at the
start of their relationship "because
there so many different types of rab-
bis and I didn't know then where he
stood regarding the various levels of
observance."
But she liked Jose from the start.
"He was a nice guy, with family val-
ues and had a sense of humor."
But she never expected to marry a
rabbi.
Jose, 26, was raised in Houston but
now lives in Oak Park. He was
ordained as a rabbi in Israel four years
ago.
After an initial effort to enter law
school, he sought a teaching job but
was unsuccessful "so I went back to
school."
He is now halfway through the
three-year program at the Cooley Law
