'SOLIthfield didn't know what it was like to be black from Kingston in the '60s." Adds Roberge, "But what we can strive for is the pulse and unified sound." That unified sound looks to have found its focus. Since signing with a major label in 2003, their first album of all-new material, slated for release in October, includes the promising mix of the boys having grown up a bit and bringing on board producer Jerry Harrison, former drummer for the Talking Heads. But their signature optimism is still the core of the band; and not only in spirit, but action, too: "The Torah commands that you give away a 10th of your possessions, and that's some- thing I believe in, to help people who are less fortunate than you," says Gershman. "Not everyone in the band does it because it's in the Torah, but we all believe it's important to give back." For many years, the band chose to support a nonprofit organization or charity at every show; these days, they work with various companies, donat- ing time and money as well as items to auction from their tours. At the same time, the friends are loathe to take themselves too seriously. In fact, the name Of A Revolution, says Gershman, comes from a story that Roberge wrote in high school, whose characters dealt with the chal- lenges confrontinab his generation of Nirvana-listening, angst-ridden high- school kids. "But really," says Roberge, "we were fine." Gershman agrees that the entire band is very much about embracing life. "That's how we are as friends. And musically, we aren't all dark. We try to keep things fun; we want to have a good time." He adds, "Our rev- olution is just a music revolution." ❑ O.A.R. appears with Pepper and the Southland 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, at the Meadow Brook Music Festival in Rochester.
