(For more biographical info, check Forbes.com .) Opening Aug. 12 A promising movie with lots' of Jewish connections is The 40 Year Old Virgin, a comedy-drama about a guy (Steve Carrell) who remains chaste until he meets Catherine Keener. Helmed and co-written by first-time film director JUDD APA- TOW (TV's Freaks and Geeks), Virgin has a good advance buzz as an intelli- gent charmer. Co-stars include PAUL President RUDD (Friends), SETH ROGEN (Freaks and Geeks) and ELIZABETH BANKS (Heights). The buzz isn't so good for Deuce Bigelow II starring Jewish-Filipino comic ROB SCHNEIDER, and you NINA TASSLER can easily wait for the DVD. Getting better advance notices is Four Brothers. It's an action flick that, while set in the present, is based on the 1960s western The Sons of Katie Elder. It features Mark Wahlberg as about CBS's planned miniseries on the life of Pope John Paul II, now being made with the - cooperation of the Nina Tassler Vatican. Tassler said she had read Part I of the series and found it a "papal page turner." Tassler, the daughter of a Puerto Rican mother and Jewish father, is a practicing Jew, as is her husband. Chili Time Josh Charles one of four brothers who revenge the death of their mother. JOSH CHARLES (Sports Night) has an important supporting role. Pope Wows 'Em "I'm a Jewish Puerto Rican, and I found this story incredibly com- pelling. He's a great character." So said CBS Entertainment Baseball great Wade Boggs, who was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame July 31, always drew the Hebrew letter chai in the dirt before entering the batter's box. This led many fans to think he was Jewish. I knew he wasn't, but until Jewish reporter MARK GROENICH recendy asked Boggs about drawing the symbol, it was very hard to find out why Boggs did it. Boggs explained that when he was a boy, he saw the symbol for chai in a magazine, with an explanation that it meant life and good luck. Although not Jewish, drawing a chai became the way for the admittedly supersti-. tious player to wish himself good luck before batting. ❑ One of the leading names in mortgages is right in your own backyard To find the right mortgage for you, contact your Chase Home Finance Mortgage Specialist today.
