Mustaine said.
He was asked to play a benefit
concert in 2003 for a former
employee and did so sitting on a
stool with an acoustic guitar.
"It felt like seeing an old friend. It
felt good and drove me to reconsider
reforming the band."
First he went into the studio,
ostensibly to record his first solo
album — but what resulted in 2004
was a full-fledged Megadeth record,
The System Has Failech acclaimed as a
return to the band's mid-'80s fight-
ing form.
With new bandmates Glen Drover
(guitar), James MacDonough (bass)
and Shawn Drover (drums) on
board, Mustaine announced
Megadeth's return to touring with
Gigantour — a six-week U.S. trek
with co-headliner Dream Theater
and support from bands like Fear
Factory, Dillinger Escape Plan and
Nevermore.
"My arm's completely healed.
There are times when its a little sore,
usually after two hours of heavy
metal calisthenics. When we come
back after playing, and we're meeting
with people, your ears stop ringing,
the world stops spinning, and your
eyes stop flashing from the lights,
then I realize, 'Yeah, my hand hurts.'
But that will happen to anybody that
plays the way we do — we don't take
any breaks and there's no singalongs
like Freddie Mercury. It's all music,"
said Mustaine.

Mustaine's renewed interest in
Christianity has taken him down
some interesting paths, including
taking a firm stand against other
bands that flirt with a satanic image.
Mustaine, whose mother is Jewish,
forced the promoters of Metalist to
choose between kicking a band
called Dissection off the show or los-
ing Megadeth. He won.

"There are people who believe in
God — whether Jews or Christians.
Then there are agnostics and athe-
ists. And then there's the antithesis,
the enemy of everyone," he said.
"What the hell does Satanism have
to do with music anyway? Life is too
short; there's no need for me to put
myself in a situation that's undesir-
able for me, especially if I'm the
headliner. I think 20 years in the
business gives me some credentials."
