BEVERLY SABBATH

City: Bloomfield Hills
Kudos: Book-Crazy Volunteer

As a regular volunteer for the Bloomfield
Township Public Library and the
Bookstock annual book sale, Beverly
Sabbath frequently finds herself up to her
elbows in books, and she couldn't be hap-
pier. She has found the perfect way to
combine her love of books with her desire
to help improve the world around her.
Sabbath, who lives in Bloomfield
Hills with her husband, Larry, taught
elementary school in Royal Oak and
later began volunteering for the yearly
book sale sponsored by Brandeis
-
University in Waltham, Mass. She spent
hours sorting, boxing and labeling the
thousands of donated books that arrived
weekly at the Oak Park depot.
When the Brandeis sale was discon-
tinued, Sabbath offered her services to
The Bookstock Friends of Literacy Used
Book and Media Sale, which is held
each May at Laurel Park Place in
Livonia.
The couple, who recently celebrated
their 50th wedding anniversary, took the

concept of "high school sweethearts" a
step further: They met as students at
Durfee Intermediate School in Detroit's
Dexter-Elmhurst neighborhood.
The Sabbaths have a son and daugh-
ter and four granddaughters.

How did you help preserve the
Yiddish books donated to Bookstock?
"We had more than 400 Yiddish
books that needed a home. My hus-
band and I contribute to the National
Yiddish Book Center in Amhurst, so
we contacted their local representative,
Jerry Gerger [of West Bloomfield]. He
arranged for the books were shipped
to the center, where they will be revi-
talized and sent all over the world. It
was a good feeling to know that all
this literature and scholarship will be
preserved for future generations."

What other volunteering have you
done?
"I have several passions, and I do

the things I enjoy to help make the
world a better place; I really believe
that's what we're supposed to do.
I helped with the gardening at
B'nai David, where we belonged.
When my kids attended Interlochen
music camp, I became a volunteer par-
ent. I organized bus transportation,
did some local outreach, and helped
welcome the students who came from
other countries."

ing volunteer experiences?
"Through Jewish Family Service, I
helped recent immigrants prepare for
their citizenship tests. Then my hus-
band and I served as proctors for the
exam. It was very rewarding to see
these people who had come from the
four corners of the earth overcome
their language difficulties and become
US citizens. I met some fascinating
people."
