In addition, he was an avid bridge player and sports enthusiast. A graduate of Central High School and Wayne State University, Mrs. Kurtzman was a lifelong support- er of the city of Detroit. She opened the Birmingham Bookstore after holding previous posi- tions as the Merrill-Palmer School's director of alumni relations and teacher of home economics at Mumford High School. A member of the ACLU, the NAACP, the Demo- cratic Party, Planned Parenthood, Americans for Democratic Action, Chamber Music Society and the Detroit Institue of Arts. She was also a Stratford Shakespeare Festival Patron, an active supporter of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, WAND and a member of Birmingham Temple.
