truly understanding the magic of
Camp Mak-A-Dream.

In his Editor's Notebook, Robert Sklar
says: "Let Truth Be Told" (July 14,
page 5). So, let's tell the whole truth.
In "Local Reaction" (July 14, page
16), a statement from the Islamic Center
of America condemned the London ter-
rorist acts. I wonder what was in the
unquoted portions, but in one case, the
Detroit News revealed that at least one
signer was being disingenuous.
Imam Mohammad Ali Elahi made
similar statements in the July 16
Detroit News except that he elaborated
on the cause of terrorism. And what
does he fault as a contributing factor
for terrorism? He blames the immigra-
tion of Jews to Israel and the poverty
of the Palestinians, which we know is
caused by the cost of waging genocide
against Israel.
The Detroit News further states that
Islam is a peaceful faith. Islam's prophet
said: "The Hour will not be established
until you fight with the Jews, and the
stone behind which a Jew will be hid-
ing will say, `0 Muslim! There is a Jew
hiding behind me, so kill him.'"
(Hadith, Volume 4, Book 52, Number
177). This and many more vicious
rants from the Prophet Muhammad in
the Koran make this claim more than
chutzpah; it is outright vulgar.
This is the Big Lie ala Stalin.

Kudos to Story Development Editor
Keri Guten Cohen for taking top hon-
ors for the "Big Sky, Big Hearts" story
on Camp Mak-A-Dream (Oct. 15,
page 40). You did a fabulous job and
the story touched many people who
were not aware of our wonderful cost-
free camp in Montana for children
and young adults with cancer.
We received numerous phone calls
from individuals inquiring about the
camp for their children as well as
adults looking to volunteer their serv-
ices in Montana. We also received a
very special gift due to Keri's article.
A couple in San Francisco, who were
so impressed with our organization
-after reading "Big Sky, Big Hearts,"
donated $10,000 to Camp Mak-A-
Dream. Being a cost-free camp, we are
dependent upon our donors for pro-
viding these camp experiences for so
many children and young adults in
need.
On behalf of all the children and
young adults of Camp Mak-A-Dream
and our staff, I thank you, Keri, for
your time in visiting the camp and

Fading Hebrew Movement

The year 1988 marked the 80 year
anniversary of Histadrut Ivrit of America
which is the Hebrew designation of The
Hebrew Movement of America advanc-
ing the Hebrew Language.
In 1921, Hadoar, the oldest of
Hebrew publication in America, began.
In 1963, the Lamishpacha Hebrew
Monthly started. Sulam Yaacov (Jacob's
Ladder), designated for the younger
Hebrew learners, followed suit.
Another important project of
Histadrut Ivrit was Toy Likhtov (It's Good
to Write), headed for many years by
Aviva Benamy, a veteran Hebrew educa-
tor. It included thousands of Hebrew
school students whose Hebrew creations
in prose and poetry were compiled and
published once a year by the Histadrut
and distributed to the schools.
In celebration of the 80th milestone
of Histadrut Ivrit, it published the
definitive book on the movement and
its accomplishments. The book was
written by Prof. Moshe Pelli, a profes-
sor of Hebrew literature and a scholar
and researcher of the Hebrew
Haskallah (Enlightenment). Dr. Pelli,
an Israeli native, is the founder and
chairman of the Department of Jewish
Studies in the University of Central
Florida in Orlando. He was a founder
and one of the first editors of

Lamishpacha Hebrew Monthly.
Almost a year ago, Hebrew readers
of the now-quarterly Hadoar and
Lamishpacha Hebrew Monthly and the
young readers of Sulam-Yaacov, were
informed that all three publications
will cease to publish. The news was
devastating and incredulous.
Many readers asked me, who for
many years contributed regularly to
Hadoar and Lamishpacha, whether the
decision is reversible. I held hope that
somehow a person who has great love
of the Hebrew language and the finan-
cial ability will breathe new life into
the movement. This didn't happen.
I tried to go to the Histadrut Ivrit
Web site (HebrewUsa.org), but discov-
ered it no longer exists. I still hope. I
can't conceive that Histadrut Ivrit,
Hadoar and Lamishpacha were a mere
fleeting episode in Jewish America.
