In the film, Sarah Nolan (Lane), a
recent divorcee, is urged back into the
dating game by her family. Ultimately,
she tries the Web and meets Jake
Anderson (Cusack), but there are a
number of disasters along the way,
including a blind date with her wid-
owed father.
Which brings us back to a joyous
Goldberg on the phone: "We've had a
couple of screenings, and the reaction
has been great. People have been say-
ing no one makes those kinds of
movies anymore, with real people and
real situations. That's very satisfying to
me because that's always been the kind
of comedy I enjoy doing, where the
laughs are laughs of recognition
because you see yourself.
'Always, for me, it's in specificity —
where you get the universality of it.
The worst thing I could have done is
make the Silvers and Bergers the
Andersons."

The Silvers and Bergers were the fami-
lies in Goldberg's most personal work,
TV's Brooklyn Bridge. "That was basi-
cally a documentary about my life. It
was exactly my situation. Grandma
was downstairs, and I shared a room
with my brother.
"My brother being the great guy

that he is ewas always looking out for
me. In one of the early episodes, he
kisses me when he says goodbye.
Someone said no one would do that,
and I told [him], 'You gotta be kid-
ding.' My brother would never say
goodbye without kissing me."
"I think there was in that world of
Judaism and Bensonhurst a real sense
of fairness, which is one of the things
that interests me. I don't work well
any place where that isn't present."
Unlike many film stars, Lane and
Cusack knew the names of all the
craftspeople and greeted them. It was
that aspect of their personality as
much as their acting ability that made
them appealing to Goldberg. "I know
what works for me. I'm a Brooklyn
guy from the schoolyard. I need to see
family and friends on the set."
The Brooklyn guy is back in
Vermont. "I'm happy back here. It's
just a good place. I don't spend two
minutes a day doing something I don't
want or being with someone I don't
want to [be with]."
