REALITY BITE from page 33
The series tracks the nerve-
wracking behind-the-scenes
selection process of two pilots,
has them cast, designed, rewrit-
ten. rehearsed, taped — then
viewers vote on their favorite.
Winners receive a cash prize of
$25,000 plus exclusive represen-
tation for one year from their
choice of the William Morris
Agency or the Creative Artists
Agency. The "losers" receive a
once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
"I jumped at the chance to be
involved in this," says
Zimmerman, who adds that his
ultimate goal with this project
would be to executive produce
one of these pilots for NBC.
"Going through the pilot
process has so many twists and
turns, and Situation shows the
good, bad and ugly. Networks
will have thousands of ideas and
only a handful get on the air.
And it shows the craziness of
networks castings at the same
time, so there's a feeding frenzy
over directors [and] actors."
Along with co-show
runner/executive producer
Maxine Lapiduss (it was like an
arranged marriage that just
clicked"), it is Zimmerman's job
to "run someone else's show:
executive producing, babysitting,
teaching, mentoring, being the
eyes and ears over the whole
process," he says.
"You're bombarded with ques-
tions that you have to decide on
the spot, about the set, about
hair, whether lines should be in
or out, who to direct the show.
"When you're writing, you
have to open your heart. But
when you're producing, you have
to be pragmatic and not let your
heart make decisions. And even
though each pilot is only 15
minutes, we had to produce two
shows simultaneously. So you
have to be a great multi-tasker,
which I love."
He adds, "Either that, or schiz-
ophrenic."
The eight episodes of
Situation: Comedy premiere 8
p.m. Tuesdays on Bravo;
