director of American United for the
Separation of Church and State, also
will address the conference. His talk is
tided "Religious Right: More Intrusive
Now Than Ever," and will focus on the
religious right's involvement with gov-
ernment and policy.
Many, like Jonathan David "Yoni"
Makepeace of Windsor, will be attend-
ing the conference for social reasons. "I
am attending to meet new people and
perhaps gain insights into bisexual, gay,
lesbian and transgender religiousity or
spirituality," said Makepeace, who
learned about the conference from the
Jewish Gay Network of Michigan.
Kevin Werner of West Bloomfield,
president of Gaygle, EMU's Jewish
LGBT and ally student group, who
volunteered at last year's conference,
will be distributing literature at the
Gaygle table this year.
"When I went last year it was so
enlightening," he said. "It is such an
informative and helpful conference to
learn about various different faiths
dealing with LGBT people's spiritual
side."
With concerns that there is an inac-
curate stereotype of LGBT culture in
the media as being non-spiritual, he
said, "I feel it is helpful to people who
need the support of the religious corn-
munity where so many LGBT people
have been shut out."
