So many people forwarded the
message — seeking additional help
— that it has now gone out to hun-
dreds in Detroit's Jewish community.
Robyn Tink says she's touched by the
e-mails, cards and donations she's
received, some from people she does-
n't even know.
"The Jewish community in Detroit
is phenomenal; I think it's one of the
rare cities like that," said Linda Tink.
The experimental procedure Robyn
plans to try involves a device called a
Penguin Cold Cap.
The lightweight cap, developed in
England, uses a special cold-conduct-
ing gel to control scalp temperature
during chemotherapy treatments. It's
said to narrow the blood vessels and
reduce the amount of toxic drugs
that reach hair follicles. According to
the manufacturer, the system has
been 80 percent effective in prevent-
ing damage and hair loss.
"Healthwise, I feel fine. When I
look at mygelf in the mirror, I look
fine — if you have no hair, you look
sick," Tink said. "So, I think if this
could save someone from going
through that trauma, that would be
amazing.
The procedure is not covered by
insurance; and the family doesn't
know how much it will cost, but
they're willing to do whatever they
can to try and make this difficult
time a little easier.
"It's a process you have to get
through one step at a time," said
Linda Tink.
Added sister-in-law Jocelyn,
"Robyn's been remarkably strong and
positive and taking everything in
stride. I think she will set a good
example, especially for younger
women who know her and will see
her go through this process." ❑
