as good a time as before, but some-
times the competition suffers. It's not
as competitive as 10 years ago, but
that's not necessarily bad."
Most Maccabi sites have 600-1,000
participants these days. When Detroit
played host again in 1990, the com-
munity housed 2,200 Jewish teens
from the U.S. and 10 other countries.
In 1998, the last time Maccabi had a
central North American games,
Detroit hosted 3,200 teens plus hun-
dreds of volunteer coaches and delega-
tion heads.
"We now have more kids participat-
ing" at four sites than Maccabi could
handle at one site, Dr. Horowitz said.
At the same time, the size of dele-
gations from major cities has been
declining as more and more Jewish
community centers from across the
U.S. and Canada ask to participate.
When Detroit hosted in 1998, it had
400 participating athletes, compared
to this year's 148. Other contribut-
ing factors to the decline in delega-
tion size is the cost of the Games,

the earlier start of the school year,
camp schedules and competing
activities.
"It's not cheap to participate," Dr.
Horowitz said, "and yet the JCCA
[the national Jewish Community
Centers Association, which sponsors
the Games] loses money every year."
Costs include renting facilities and
hiring officials, providing lunches
and social activities. 'And the air-
lines are killing us," he said. Team

Dr. Horowitz would like to see the
major U.S. cities in a hosting rotation,
with their delegation size limited to
under 100 if they don't host. Los
Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia and
Boston have each hosted only once, he
said.
Asked if there was any movement in
Detroit to play host again, he respond-
ed, "I don't know. But I think it would
be great for the JCC [Jewish
Community Center of Metropolitan
Detroit] to do it again. It would be
great publicity." ❑
