OBITS on page 87 Community Minded LEONARD POGER Copy Editor T hroughout his life, Abram Medow was an avid sup- porter — in both dollars and personal effort — of Jewish charities and causes. As a teenager some 65 years ago, he helped build a Habonim Labor Zionist camp near Chelsea. Later in life, as a successful businessman, he donated a Sefer Torah to the Israeli settlement where his son David lives. Mr. Medow, 81, of Beverly Hills, died unexpectedly July 1, 2005, of a heart attack while visiting David in Alon, Israel. Mr. Medow and his wife, Rhoda, were in Israel as a 25th wedding anniversary trip. Mrs. Medow said her husband was a strong supporter of various Jewish and charitable programs, such as the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), Yad Ezra, JARC, Orchards Children's Services, and Congregation Shaarey Zedek — where he was a familiar face at the morning minyan. Mr. Medow and his first wife, the late Shirley Medow, were instrumen- tal in building a home where devel- opmentally disabled residents live under JARC supervision. Born and raised in Detroit, Mr. Medow graduated Cass Tech High School shortly before enlisting in the Army when the United States entered the war. After being discharged following more than four years in the service, he married and, in 1947, founded Standard Distributing, a distributor of ethnic health and beauty aids, based in Detroit. He served as the company's CEO until it closed two years ago. The business reached its peak in the 1960s, but a substantial portion of his accounts moved away follow- ing the 1967 riots. "Determined to survive, Abe and his people hit the streets and opened new markets outside of Detroit," according to a publication issued in 1997, on the company's 50th anniversary. "By the end of the '60s, Standard had fully recovered." The youngest of four children born to immigrant parents and the only son, he was nicknamed "Sonny" by his sisters, although he was later known to everyone as "Abe," his wife said. Although he didn't attend college, Abram Medow Mr. Medow learned from the "school of life — he was a phenomenal stu- dent," his wife said. Describing him as a mentsh, she said her husband "always believed in giving back to the community." Mr. Medow was a strong family man who supported his children's activities, enjoyed his grandchildren and made his Passover seders major ingatherings that relatives enthusias- tically anticipated. "He was quiet, but had a wonder- ful smile," said his wife. "Everyone felt comfortable with him." Mr. Medow is survived by his wife, Rhoda Medow; sons and daughters- in-law, Daniel and Miriam Medow of Huntington Woods, David and Deena Baruch; daughters and sons- in-law, Lynn Medow and David Vercammen, Heidi Baruch and Pablo Michalewicz, Dana Baruch and Michael Krell; grandchildren, Michael, Jonathan and Zachary Medow, Emily and J.J. Vercammen, Jacob and Noah Krell, Avishai, Tali, Shirel and Eliav Baruch, Maya Michalewicz; sister, Mary Tarnow. He was the beloved husband of the late Shirley Medow; dear brother of the late Mollie Sukenic and the late Sara Berlin. Interment was at Clover Hill Park Cemetery,.
