THE HERITAGE

Of SOUTHFIELD

Exceptional Senior Living

My mother and I read Robert Sklar's
Editor's Notebook ("Hunger Grips
Israel," Oct. 1, page 5) on the crisis of
hunger in Israel and the efforts of
Hazon Yeshaya, a network of soup
kitchens throughout the country, to
help Israel's most vulnerable citizens:
children and the elderly. We were
shocked and dismayed to learn about
the magnitude of the problem [700,000
children live below the poverty line!].
We learned about the man who estab-
lished the organization, Abraham Israel.
He immigrated to Israel via Egypt,
France and the United States, where he
made his fortune. He has devoted his
life to helping Israel's needy. He plans to
expand his operation to include dental
clinics and vocational training facilities.
Through correspondence with him,
we discovered his soup kitchens are
almost entirely manned by volunteers,
allowing 97 percent of the funds raised
to go directly to the 7,000 people a day
fed by Hazon Yeshaya, which include
meals on wheels for the homebound,
school lunch deliveries (which are often
the child's only hot meal of the day)
and meals distributed at the center for
those who are able to come.
When our daughter Amanda chose to
celebrate her bat mitzvah with a family
trip to Israel (joined by her grandmoth-
er and uncle) we decided, in addition to
Amanda's generous gift of a portion of
her bat mitzvah money and money we
raised, to spend two of our 12-day trip
volunteering in one of Hazon Yeshaya's
soup kitchens in Jerusalem.
We peeled vegetables for hours the
first clay on the second, we assembled
and distributed meals and a large bag of
groceries to 100 elderly people in the
area (Holocaust survivors among them).
We met Abraham Israel and his sister,
Sara, and we were extremely impressed.
Thank God for people like them! We
pledged to help in any way we could.
If your readers can find it in their
hearts to help this wonderful organiza-
tion (with time or money), they can do
so by contacting them at
usahazonyeshaya.org.
